Pet of the Month - In the Limelight! at Cloquet Animal Hospital

Hi, I'm Pokey. That's me, when I was just 15 minutes old. I'm a Great Dane puppy and was born on November 11, a day and a half after my four brothers and sisters. They were born without any problems on November 10th. But I decided I was pretty comfortable where I was and wasn't quite ready to face the cold, harsh world. Mom wasn't in any distress, labor had stopped after the fourth puppy was born. The only reason anyone knew I was still in there is that an x-ray taken two weeks before showed five puppies. When they counted, there were only four. My owner Miles waited anxiously hoping I would come out on my own. But after 12 hours, he decided to bring Bindi, my mom, in to Cloquet Animal Hospital. Another x-ray was taken, and there I was. After a couple attempts to induce labor, the doctors decided Mom needed a Caesarian section. I did not come easily - it took two vets, Dr. Nelson and Dr. Shepherd, to remove me from my mother's womb. Probably because I was the largest puppy either of them had ever delivered, weighing in at 1 pound 13 ounces just after birth. Once out, I had a hard time breathing and had a weak heart beat. The veterinary nurse, Teresa, put all her efforts into reviving me until I finally came around. Shortly after surgery, I was up and crying for Mom, ready to eat. Today I am thriving and having no problems keeping up with my brothers and sisters. You would never know that I had any trouble at birth. I am just thankful that everyone knew how to count!
