Hello! My name is Cristen and I am a receptionist here at Cloquet Animal Hospital. I received a phone call on August 7th from a woman who had found a tiny kitten in the woods. The kitten was probably only a few day's old. The woman had a cat with a litter of her own, but her cat would not accept the kitten. She was afraid the kitten would die! I gave her the number for Friends of Animals, and told her that they may have a cat that would adopt the kitten. Dr. Shepherd said that the kitten could also be bottle fed, but needed to eat every hour. The same woman called later on, about 5:30pm, right as we were closing. She explained that the shelter was closed and that no one had called her back. She was short on money and didn’t know what to do. I told her that I could get her a bottle and formula to get the kitten through the weekend. She agreed. I went to her house, and somehow ended up taking the kitten home with me!
Now, I don't really even like cats, and I have been allergic to them all my life. I have gotten to know Chloe the clinic kitty here at CAH since starting here about 1 year ago, and since I am around her almost all day, I started thinking that cats weren’t all bad, or at least that she was the exception. When I saw the tiny kitten, I just kept thinking that if I didn’t take her, she would probably die. My plan was to keep her over the weekend and take her to the shelter on Monday. I fed kitten formula with a syringe every hour. It was like having a newborn, which was fun because all my kids are now older and I missed having a baby. My kids took to her right away, and I became attached also. So, on Monday, she did not go to the shelter. I took her with me to work, and everyone there fell in love! They started calling her “Cotton,” because she looked like a tiny cotton ball and she was so soft! She is much bigger now, and can eat regular kitten food. I named her “Freyja,” after an important Scandinavian princess. She had blonde hair and blue eyes- Freyja is pure white with two different colored blue eyes. With the help of Dr. Shepherd (who thinks I should have stuck with the name “Cotton,”) and the rest of the wonderful staff here, I have a healthy kitten now. I am just awaiting the approval of my dog, Karra, who was the very first member of my family. It has been a wonderful experience for my kids and I to have her!
