I got Rookie when he was six weeks old. When Rookie was about six months old, I contacted Hearing Service Dogs of Minnesota. They came and tested him to see if they would work with us, being that I got him myself. We passed that test, then the training began for obedience and service. Rookie has been trained for five sounds: the alarm, doorbell, smoke detector, get mom, and intruder. He has also passed his public access. It takes six months to one year for completion. This depends on if you want public access or not. It has been a lot of work, but totally worth it all! Brenda Alanen
